Being a researcher on radio or podcast output can be hugely exciting and rewarding. In one working day, you may speak to an 18-year-old girl campaigning against period poverty, the Somali-born Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Parisian shoe designer Christian Louboutin – as our own researcher can confirm from experience! 

For many, the researcher role is also a stepping stone towards becoming a fully-fledged producer. 
But what distinguishes the best researchers from the rest? What do production teams most want out of their researchers? 

This workshop gives budding radio and podcast researchers the skills they need to make their mark across a range of programming.
It is aimed at people who are keen to work as a researcher in radio or audio output, or who are already working in such a role and want to hone their skills in pre-interviewing, brief writing and pitching ideas.

Key elements of the course include: 

• Preparing and conducting a pre-interview with a ‘real’ studio guest
• Writing a research brief
• Online research and social media: benefits and pitfalls
• Opportunity to pitch your own idea to CTVC’s CEO or another senior staff member

By the end of the course, participants will:

• Be able to demonstrate that they can research any subject quickly and reliably
• Have shown that they can identify, pre-interview and accurately evaluate potential guests 
• Have written an accurate, well-distilled research brief – and be able to explain what such a brief needs
• Be confident to use a variety of research resources, including social media, while knowing the pitfalls
• Show that they are able to generate and pitch strong ideas
